Nguyen Van Phi served as intelligence officer for the Quyet Thang regiment and was responsible for gathering information from local residents sympathetic to the Viet Cong. Though present, he did not take part directly in the ambush of Charlie Company. Under the cover of darkness he made his way into the area to assess the effectiveness of the ambush.
